Coping When Tragedy Strikes
By Tom Marcoux, America's Communciation Coach
(Special Note: This article appeared near the time of the Sept. 11th tragedies -- when Tom Marcoux responded and appeared in a number of cities to raise funds for the American Red Cross and to provide comfort to audience members)
Many people fear that additional terrorist strikes will occur in more U.S. cities. We all need coping strategies during disasters. Disasters incite our fear and adrenaline responses. Coping strategies can keep us healthy during tough times. Many of my clients and audience members are confronting high stress. I use my degree in psychology and certification in counseling to respond to them with compassion and methods they can use to create relief. Here are excerpts from my book "Coping When Tragedy Strikes." We use the acrostic is "C.O.P.E.":
CREATE
Create Time-Pockets.
Take time to create a little peace for yourself. Don't leave CNN on constantly - maybe check-in every 2 hours. Keeping CNN on constantly keeps you in an adrenaline-state. When the adrenal glands function too much, you can be vulnerable to health problems. During the Gulf War, people left CNN on all the time and suffered greatly. Take time to exercise. Make time to read spiritual books. Devote time to talk with family members with the TV off. We need to express our feelings. See a counselor if you feel in distress. Gather in support groups. Make some times where you distract your mind. Seeing a movie can be just the release some people need. Maintain as much of your daily routine as possible.
OPEN
Open to focus on what is unchangeable.
You are a Spirit having a human experience. Whatever spiritual practices appeal to you, devote time to them now. Some people feel too stressed to engage in meditation at this time. But the answer is to still turn off the TV or radio, and take some quiet time for yourself. Write in a journal. Read spiritual books to gain a larger perspective.
PREPARE
Prepare your options.
To handle fear, make a list of options.
Call an out-of-state friend/family member and set up a place so that family members can call and leave/pickup messages. Talk with friends, get more perspectives and more ideas.
EXPECT
Expect and focus on the good.
We need to release our fear and stress during a tough time like this. We need to direct our own thoughts in positive directions. This is called "Expectation Management." I share these ideas in my book "How to Heal When Life's Too Much." Focus on these thoughts and expectations:
- "There is room for hope."
- "In this moment, I am all right."
- "I can handle this."
- "I can learn what I need to do."
- "We'll get through this together."
- "Things will settle down eventually."
REPLACE WORRY
Many people connect being a good person with worrying about other people. It is important to consider that a replacement for worry is being concerned, taking action (preparing) and letting go. Researchers note that unrelieved stress can cause health problems. It is crucial that everyone becomes conscious of having a coping strategy.
CONCLUSION
Let's remember that in order to give to others we need to keep ourselves in good shape mentally, physically and spiritually. Continually impact yourself with healing and nurturing materials. Many blessings to you during this tough time.
