Live Long, Live Well

To live long and live well we focus on...
- living longer
- enjoying improved health
- enjoying better relationships
A. Living Longer
Longevity Tip: Stay Active
Researchers emphasize that people who are vitally interested in life live longer. Get outside at least once a day. Take walks. To stay fit, remember the key phrase: "eat less, move more." Have a strategic exercise plan. My father Al Marcoux and I discuss the keys to exercising consistently in our audio program Live Long, Live Well My father is 68 years old, and he consistently jogs, walks, and does stretching exercises. Just yesterday, we walked five miles together.
B. Enjoying Improved Health
Health Tip #1: Get Iron
Researchers point out that iron is required for oxygen-use and the healthy function of tissues, including the brain. When iron levels drop, oxygen-starved tissue results in lack of motivation and concentration, shortened attention span, fatigue, reduced work performance and memory loss. Get more iron: a) Eat more iron-rich foods, cooked dried beans and peas, dark green leafy vegetables and dried apricots and b) Drink vitamin C-rich orange juice with iron-rich meals to boost iron absorption.
Health Tip #2: Eat Vitamin B-enriched Food
Without enough B vitamins (B1, B2, B6, B12 and folic acid), one starves the brain for energy. This leads to confusion, irritability, and impaired thinking, concentration, memory, reaction time and mental clarity.
Researchers advise that we enjoy several daily servings of B-rich foods, including nonfat milk and yogurt, wheat germ, bananas, seafood, whole grains and green peas. In addition, take a moderate-dose multiple vitamin and mineral.
Health Tip #3: Get Antioxidant Nutrients
Consuming the most oxygen, the brain is exposed to a huge daily dose of free radicals, by-products of oxygen usage that attack and damage brain cells. After decades, free-radical attacks can contribute to gradual loss of memory and thinking abilities. Researchers have identified the way to neutralize free-radical attacks with antioxidant nutrients, which include vitamins C and E. Researchers recommend eating five to nine servings of: orange juice, strawberries, carrots, spinach, cantaloupe and other dark-colored fresh fruits and vegetables.
C. Enjoying Better Relationships
Relationships Tip #1: Stay Flexible
A spiritual text asks, "Would you rather be right or happy?" The point is that each person you know is like someone from another country. That person has a unique life experience and unique personality style. It is best to listen first. Ask, "Would you tell me about that?" and "Anything else?" before offering your opinion. Also it helps to ask, "Would you like any comments from me - or for me to just listen?"
Relationships Tip #2: Convert a Complaint into an Action or Request
If you find yourself complaining about something, think of an action or request you can mention. For example, if the toothpaste tube is a source of conflict, you can ask, "Would you like me to get my own tube or would you consider squeezing it from the bottom?"
Relationships Tip #3: Get Younger Friends
An old phrase is: "You are as young as you feel." As people age, a number of their friends die. It is vital to have an expanding circle of friends. Some people as they age hold strict standards for friendship. They feel that a friend must be one you can absolutely count on in many ways. However, it is possible to have various types of friends: a) a friend to go walking with, b) another friend who is a trustworthy confidant, and c) a friend with whom you only talk about a hobby. Find new friends by taking a class...or perhaps, teaching a class at a community center.
CONCLUSION:
Using the methods outlined above you can live longer and feel better. Use this article as your springboard. I devote much of each day to find new ways to serve people; therefore, I invite you to look at the resource listed below.
The best to you,
Tom Marcoux
